Abstract

This report documents the results of the cultural resource survey of the proposed Cane Creek-Juno 115 kV Transmission Line Corridor, Dawson and Lumpkin counties, Georgia. The field work was conducted by Jonathan A. Bloom, five senior field technicians, and one field technician during the week of July 22 to 26, and October 1 to 3, 1991. Eighteen prehistoric sites and three twentieth-century liquor still sites were located during the course of this survey, as well as seven prehistoric isolated finds. All but one of the prehistoric sites consist of diffuse lithic scatters containing primarily quartz debitage. Chert was often present as a minority raw material. Two of the prehistoric sites contained sand tempered pottery. The remaining prehistoric site consisted of a quartz quarry and workshop area. The quarry area was located on a knoll slope while the workshop area was situated on the top of the knoll. The knoll on which this site was located, at some time in the recent past, had been logged and burned. Many of the trees had been pushed over, disturbing the upper stratum of the soil profile over most of this site. This was indicated in the shovel tests, with bark and other timbering debris having been recovered from as deep as 14 cm below the current ground surface. The adverse effects from lumbering activities has destroyed the research potential of this site. Sites 20 and 21 are the only cultural resources located during this survey which appear to be eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). It is recommended that these sites be avoided during the construction of the proposed transmission line. Consequently, no additional archaeological investigations are recommended prior to construction of the proposed transmission line and access roads at any of the sites recorded during these investigations.
