Abstract

This report documents the results of the cultural resources survey of a proposed shoreline stabilization project on Black Island, McIntosh County, Georgia. This cultural resources survey project was conducted by Garrow & Associates, Inc., Atlanta for the Black Island Homeowner's Association, Brunswick, Georgia. The field survey was conducted by the author on September 16-17, 1991. The nature of the shoreline stabilization project will consist of the deposit of broken concrete and broken cinder blocks along approximately 105 m of the northern edge of the island, on the marsh side to prevent further erosion of the north end of the island by Black Island Creek. This cultural resources project documents the destructive erosional effects that Black Island Creek has had on the north end of the island, and concludes that the proposed shoreline stabilization project should not result in the destruction of any cultural resources, but will help to prevent the further erosion of site 9MC255 located on the northwest corner of the island. Consequently, no additional archaeological investigations are recommended prior to the construction of this shoreline stabilization project.
