Abstract

New South Associates conducted a Phase I Archaeological Survey of approximately seven acres for the location of a recreational trail within the Battle of Brown's Mill historic site. Thirty-six shovel test pit locations were investigated at a 30-meter (100-ft.) interval. Shovel test pits were oriented along the proposed trail corridor 811 meters (2,661 ft.) in length and placed in the areas between the trail and Millard Farmer Road. No artifacts were recovered from shovel test pit excavation. Additionally, areas with some preservation of plow zone were subjected to metal detector survey in a 15-meter (50-ft.) radius of shovel test pit locations. All metal targets identified in seven locations examined consisted of modern metal trash or natural ferrous minerals. No metal artifacts were identified during metal detector survey. Historic cultivation has impacted the preservation of project area soils and years of collecting by Civil War enthusiasts has removed artifacts associated with the Battle of Brown's Mill. No additional archaeological examination of the project area is recommended.
