Abstract

Southern Research, Historic Preservation Consultants, Inc. conducted a phase one archaeological survey for the proposed Elim Church Road Substation in Long County, Georgia. The proposed substation will be located approximately 4.25 miles northeast of Ludowici, Georgia (Figure 1). It is situated on the northwest side of County Road 113 (Elim Church Road) near its intersection with County Road 41 (Barrett Cemetery Road). The Area of Potential Effect (APE) consists of a proposed access road, a proposed substation tract and an additional easement within the existing transmission line. The APE comprises approximately six acres. The APE is in a nearly flat, low lying tract that drains from northeast to southwest. There is existing electrical transmission line that runs along the northwest boundary of the APE. The property is wooded with some exposed ground surface along the existing transmission line. Figures 2, 3 and 4 illustrate the conditions at the APE in late September 2010.
