Abstract

Southern Research, Historic Preservation Consultants, Inc., conducted an intensive archaeological survey of approximately so miles of the Thomasville-Pine Grove 230 kV line corridor in Brooks, Lowndes, and Thomas counties, Georgia. This existing corridor begins at the existing Thomasville substation at Georgia Highway 3 in Thomas County, and runs roughly east to the Pine Grove primary substation at US Highway 221jGeorgia Highway 31 in Lowndes County. The purpose of this survey was to identify potentially significant cultural resources within the Area of Project Effect (APE). Archaeologists excavated shovel tests and examined available surface exposures along the Thomasville-Pine Grove 230 kV transmission line corridor during October and November of 2010. Special attention was given to areas around the structures and landforms of high probability. Seven archaeological sites were identified within the APE: 9B047, 9B048, 9B049, 9LWno, 9LW111, 9TH87, and 9TH88. Sites 9LW11o, 9LW111, 9TH87, and 9TH88 have unknown prehistoric components; sites 9B047 and 9B049 have mid-nineteenth to twentieth century historic components. Site 9B048 has both unknown prehistoric component and an historic component dating from the late nineteenth to twentieth century. Six of the seven sites are recommended not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP, and do not require further investigation. One site - 9TH88 - has an unknown NRHP standing.
