Abstract

The proposed project involves the widening and upgrading of a U.S. Forest Service service road within the Chattahoochee National Forest in Fannin County (Figure 1). This is being done to provide better access to a residential area on Blue Ridge Lake. The present facility is a sixteen foot unpaved surface with a ditch-to-ditch right-of-way of 25 to 30 feet. The proposed project will follow the same alignment with a twenty-six foot paved bed on a 60 foot right-of-way utilizing the existing road bed. The project is approximately .6 mile long. From U.S. 76/S.R. 2 the road follows the side of a hill for .15 mile where it divides; the project heading straight and climbing to the summit of a ridge (Horse Point) and the other road following a gully to the left. The ridge which the project follows is uneven and narrow for the most part,: but a few relatively broad, flat areas are encountered. Toccoa Cove of Blue Ridge Lake lies to the west and Garren Cove lies to the east. The entire area is forested, predominately in hardwoods with very few mixed pines, with the exception of the first .05 mile from U.S. 76/S.R. 2 and east of the road, which is under cultivation.
