Abstract

Controlled vertical excavations were conducted at Miners Creek (9Da91), a Middle Woodland habitation site in southeast Dekalb County, Georgia, for the purpose of determining the physical stratigraphy and to develop a relative chronology of the pottery types. The pottery collected in these excavations was placed into eight categories based on surface finish and referred to as "varieties" rather than ''types". No visually discernable separated cultural zones were observed. Because of this, frequencies of three of the surface varieties through the arbitrary excavation levels were tested for statistical significance using chi square; the strength of the assumed relationships were evaluated using Pearson's Contingency Coefficient. It was found that the varieties are continuous through the deposits, suggesting that the Miners Creek site was occupied repeatedly by the same social group.
