Abstract

Location: This project involves the reconstruction of the I-85/I-285 intersection in DeKalb County. UI-285-1(95) extends from Buford Highway east to Henderson Road for a distance of 2.99 miles. I-85-2{24) extends from south of Chamblee/Tucker Road north to the DeKalb/Gwinnett County Line for a distance of 2.88 miles. Lanes will be increased on I-285 to eight with two auxiliary lanes and on I-85 to six with right-of-way available for an additional two lanes. A small amount of right-of-way will have to be acquired. For a more detailed description of the design, please refer to the Draft Negative Declaration. Archaeological Assessment: No sites in the vicinity of the project are listed in the Site Files at Georgia State University and the University of Georgia. Prior to field examination, the only area of archaeological concern was felt to be the portion of Peachtree Creek that flows through the project. However, after survey of the project by car and foot, the area proved to be highly developed and the land adjacent to the Creek to have been extensively altered by previous construction (see aerial, the drive-in theatre in particular). Any archaeological sites that may have existed in the project area must have been destroyed upon original construction of the interstates and the businesses in the vicinity of the project. Thus, in the opinion of the Staff Archaeologist, the cultural resources of the State will not be affected by the project's construction.
