Abstract

The purpose of this Phase I investigation was to determine the presence or absence of prehistoric and historic cultural resources within the approximately 4-acre parcel of a proposed development, Carrollton, Carroll County, Georgia by First Georgia Banking Company. This archaeological survey will assist in establishing recommendations for further study or avoidance. The project parcel is generally overgrown with weeds and briars. The cultural resource survey was completed in compliance with known cultural resource guidelines and regulations of the State of Georgia (Department of Natural Resources, Historic Preservation Division) and Federal Government (Section 1 06). A cultural resources reconnaissance survey of the entire project area considered for development was undertaken, as was the excavation of shovel tests. The project is situated southwest of the intersection of Tom Reeves Drive and Ben Scott Boulevard. Seven previously recorded archaeological sites are listed on the University of Georgia state site database within one mile of the project tract. These sites include 9CL28, 9CL67, 9CL75, 9CL76, 9CL77, 9CL77, 9CL78, and 9CL213. Site 9CL76 is located at the western edge of the project parcel, and Site 9CL77 is situated in the northeastern comer of the project parcel. There was no surface nor subsoil evidence encountered in conjunction with either Site 9CL76 or Site 9CL77 during field testing activities. Sixteen (16) shovel tests were excavated on a thirty meter interval along two transects spaced thirty meters apart. Though the parcel had been previously cultivated, a heavy growth of weeds and briars reduced ground surface visibility from 0 to approximately 50 percent. All shovel tests were negative and no precontact or historic cultural sites or features were discovered. On the basis of the cultural resource fieldwork completed it is our recommendation that the proposed development be permitted at this location.
