A cultural resources survey was conducted by the author on approximately 30 acres of the Chattooga District, Chattahoochee National Forest, in northern Habersham County, Georgia, in April, 2005. The survey was done under contract with Mr. Warren Bare prior to a proposed land exchange involving Mr. Tom Phillips, Mr. Bare, and the U.S. Forest Service. This parcel was generally steep-sided, with a narrow ridge running its length. The surfaces had been disturbed by logging and road building in the past, and possibly farming on the few level and near-level spots. Old logging roads were visible in several places, one of which heavily disturbed the major saddle or gap on the tract. Vegetation included mixed hardwoods and pines, with relatively little undergrowth. There were no streams on this piece, but it was drained north and south by tributaries of the Chattahoochee River. Regular screened shovel testing failed to produce any indication of historic or prehistoric activity or occupation sites on the parcel. There should be no effect on the cultural resources of the parcel or the area resulting from the proposed land exchange from federal to private ownership.
