Abstract

Background: During the period of September 11 through September 25, 2003 and January 6 and 7, 2004, R.S. Webb & Associates (RSWA) conducted an archeological resources survey of the proposed Nottely River Trail in Union County, Georgia. The project was performed in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended and the Archeological Resources Protection Act. The study was conducted to locate and identify cultural resources within the project area and assess resource significance based on National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria [36 CFR Part 60.4]. The project area consists of 670 meters (m) (2,200 feet) of proposed trail and a small parking area, approximately 2.4 kilometers (km) (1.5 miles) southwest of Blairsville, Georgia. Literature Search: The study included a literature/records search and a field survey of the project area. A review of pertinent NRHP files, historic structures files, and archeological site files revealed that no listed NRHP resources, previously recorded historic structures, or known archeological sites are located within or directly adjacent to the project corridor. Three previously recorded archeological sites, Sites 9UN186, 9UN187, and 9UN188 are located within 300m of the project area [(Adams (1997) and Wilkie (2001)]. Twenty-one recorded archeological sites are located within 1.61 km (1 mile) of the project area. One State recognized historic structure is located within 1.61 km of the project area. Survey Results: No archeological sites, isolated finds, or historic resources were located during the survey of the proposed Union County Nottely River Trail. Areas surveyed have been previously disturbed by logging, agricultural, and related erosional activities. Cultural resources clearance is recommended.
