Abstract

Between June 12th and June 20th James Pomfret, Shawn Patch, and Mark Barron conducted an intensive historic properties survey of two stream and wetland mitigation tracts for The Hambidge Center, Rabun County, Georgia. The proposed Upstream Tract would include both stream and wetland mitigation activities and is approximately 18.5 acres in size. The Downstream Tract would consist of only stream mitigation activities and is approximately 15 acres in size. The purpose of the survey was to identify all historic properties within the boundaries of the proposed mitigation tracts, evaluate their eligibility for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), and to assess the effect on these resources by the proposed project. This survey resulted in the identification of one property previously listed on the NRHP, the Hambidge Center Historic District and the identification of a previously unrecorded archaeological site, 9Ra259. The archaeological site, a small Late Mississippian period site, is recommended eligible for inclusion on the NRHP due to its information potential. It has been determined that the project will have no adverse effect on the Hambidge Center Historic District and no effect on site 9Ra259.
