Cultural Resource Survey of the NW Cobb Sewer Line and Force Main Project

The project consists of constructing a sanitary sewer with accompanying lift station in the-immediate vicinity of the Lake Acworth Recreation Area, on property under the jurisdiction of the Corps of Engineers. These combine with three previously proposed sewer lines; Proctor Creek, Butler Creek, and North Cobb High School; all pass through Corps property and have been surveyed for possible impacts to cultural resources. Portions of the Butler Creek right-of-way also pass through an area recently severely impacted by Corps-approved timber thinning, in which sites were exposed outside the sewer line construction zone. These sites have been described elsewhere (Meier, 1983). The combined sewer lines lead to a proposed treatment plant, not within Corps jurisdiction, in the 21st District of Cherokee County. A force main effluent line is proposed to follow Ga-92 highway across Corps land at Clark Creek to the Payne community, thence along Kellogg Road and Yacht Club Road where the force main reenters Corps land, eventually to enter the former Etowah River channel in Allatoona Reservoir proper. The objective of this assessment is to ensure c6nsideration of all cultural resources, especially those of an archeological or historical character, on properties under the jurisdiction of the United States Army, Corps of Engineers, in compliance with federal regulations and guidelines of the Executive Branch of the Federal Government, including the U. S. Department of Interior and Department of Defense.
