Abstract

In compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and amendments thereto, project STP-070-1 ( 11) in Montgomery County has been surveyed with respect to archaeological resources, especially those on or eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The purpose of the survey was to locate, identify and evaluate the significance of any archaeological resources within the proposed project's area of potential environmental effect. Proposed project STP-070-1 (11) in Montgomery County would consist of the addition of two passing lanes on SR 15/SR 29 in Montgomery County between Tarrytown and Higgston. The proposed project would provide a 12 foot passing lane northbound from MP 6.07 to MP 7.5 and southbound from MP 8.75 to MP 9.98. The shoulder adjacent to the widening would be extended to 10 feet while the existing offside shoulder would be retained at 8 feet. Existing right-of-way along SR 15/SR 29 is 100 feet and a maximum of 60 feet of additional right-of-way would be required for the majority of this project. A maximum of 100 feet of additional right-of-way would be required for intersection improvements at the intersection of SR 15/SR 29 with Braddy Road and Hilton Memory Road on the northbound passing lane. The total project length is 2.66 miles. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
