Abstract

This report contains the results of archaeological investigations of the Highway 5 site (9CK64 7) located during archaeological survey of a proposed pipeline for the Atlanta Gas Light Company (Garrow et al. 1987). This project was conducted by Garrow & Associates, Inc for Atlanta Gas Light Company using a crew of six persons for two weeks. This report also includes some of the results from the earlier testing phase (Smith 1987a) when they are necessary for a complete understanding of the site. The Highway 5 site was tested during the summer of1987 and found to contain evidence of intact cultural features. One pit feature containing animal bone was found during testing phase, suggesting that many research questions about Woodstock period (ca. A.D. 900) lifeways could be pursued by a large scale excavation project. The primary goal of the project was to recover significant scientific information prior to the destruction of the site by the proposed gas pipeline. The site was stripped of topsoil, mapped, and the features were excavated.
