Abstract

Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc., completed an archeological survey of a proposed industrial park in Cook County, Georgia, for the Cook County Economic Development Commission._ Cook County has applied for a grant from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. As part of the grant review process, the Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources requested that an archeological survey be conducted of the property. The goals of the survey were to locate, delineate, describe and evaluate archeological sites in the area of potential effect for the project. Site evaluations were made in terms of their eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places. The proposed park, which encompasses an area of roughly 142 ha (350 ac}, is located between US 41 and Interstate 75 north of the town of Cecil. At the time of our survey, most of the tract was currently or recently under cultivation, and thus provided excellent conditions for surface collection. Only a small portion of the tract was wooded and required shovel testing. The survey resulted in the identification of six archeological sites (Table 1) and seven artifact occurrences. The six sites include one prehistoric lithic scatter, three historic era house sites, and two sites that combine prehistoric lithic scatters with historic era house remains. All of the six sites are recommended ineligible to the National Register of Historic Places, due to their poor research potential or lack of integrity or both. Therefore,. it is our conclusion that no significant archeological resources will be affected by the proposed project. 9CX5, FSl, historic era house site, Ineligible. 9CX6, FS2, prehistoric lithic scatter, historic era house site, Ineligible. 9CX7, FS3, prehistoric lithic scatter, Ineligible. 9CX8, FS4, historic era house site, isolated prehistoric lithic, Ineligible. 9CX9, FS5, historic era house site, isolated prehistoric lithic, Ineligible. 9CX10, FS6, historic era house site, Ineligible.
