Abstract

During May 2007, Edwards-Pitman Environmental, Inc. (EPEI) conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of the proposed location for the Walkers Church Substation. The project area is immediately west of Walkers Church Road and would include the construction of the Walkers Church Road 115/25 kV Substation adjacent to the existing Greensboro-Lake Oconee 115 kV Transmission Line. The project area is located approximately seven kilometers (km) south of Greensboro, in Greene County, Georgia. The goal of the survey was to locate and evaluate archaeological sites within the Area of Potential Effects (APE) of the proposed undertaking, so that potential effects to any resources identified could be evaluated in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The project was conducted under a contract with Georgia Transmission Corporation. A check of the Georgia Archaeological Site Files at the University of Georgia in Athens showed that there is one previously identified archaeological site within a one km radius of the project area. Site 9GE2077 is a low density Woodland ceramic scatter. Site 9GE2077 was recommended ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). No archeological sites or isolated finds were found during the investigation. Clearance for construction is recommended for the APE.
