An intensive cultural resources survey of a proposed water pumping station on the Etowah River in Bartow County discovered one prehistoric site. The 0.04 ha (0.1 ac) project area is situated on a very narrow bench terrace above the river and below a steep, rocky slope. The site consists of a sparse scatter of chert flakes and tools and fire cracked rock from the surface to 90 cm below surface. The site has been partially disturbed by road construction and possibly erosion. Because 1) well over 1000 archeological sites are known in this portion of the Etowah River basin, 2) cultural material at the site is sparse and vertically dispersed, and 3) the site is partially disturbed, we believe that the site has little to no potential for yielding important information and therefore recommend that the site is not eligible to the National Register of Historic Places. In regard to cultural resources, we recommend that the project be given clearance to proceed.
