Abstract

In response to a request from Ignite Wireless, Inc., RESCOM Environmental Corp., has completed a Phase 1a archaeological reconnaissance and records check for a proposed telecommunications tower site in Gordon County, Georgia (Figure 1). The project is located west of Resaca, GA at 34°34’42.9”N 84°56’50.9”W, as seen on the Calhoun North, GA USGA 7.5’ topographic quadrangle (Figure 2). The project area consists of a previously disturbed unmaintained grass clearing and graded parking area adjacent to the previously disturbed unmaintained grass clearing and graded parking area adjacent to the M & M Tire Service and Repair building and measures 60-ft by 60-ft with a 116-ft easement to the west; 0.10 acre is total area (Figures 3 &4).

An archaeological records check conducted on behalf of RESCOM by the UGA Laboratory of Archaeology via the Georgia Archaeological Site File (GASF) indicates the project area overlaps site 9GO58 (Resaca Battlefield) which is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). However, based on the level of previous disturbance and development within the parcel no new soil disturbance is anticipated and the project as proposed will have no effect upon intact archeological resources, including this eligible property, its contributing features, or to other properties on or eligible for inclusion on the NRHP, provided that the project conforms to the location referenced above.

Fieldwork was conducted on December 4, 2020 by archaeologist Eric Sanchez, Indiana University 2008, under the supervision of Andrew Smith M.A., Ball State University 2010, Principal Investigator and Secretary of Interior qualified professional archaeologist.

This report details the results of the records check and site evaluation and presents the conclusions and recommendations of RESCOM concerning any additional archaeological investigations.
