Abstract

The proposed project would widen and extend on new location Old Petersburg Road in north Augusta. The proposed project would begin at the intersection of Old Petersburg Road and Baston Road then would extend northwesterly to the intersection of SR232/Old Evens Road. From this point the proposed project would extend westerly along new location before tying into SR104/Washington Road opposite Owens Road. As part of the project a new bridge would be constructed over the CSX Railroad. Existing R.O.W. varies from 50 to 60 feet. An additional 50 to 250 fret of R.O.W. will be required. An archaeological survey consistent with the proposed project corridor was surveyed for the entire length of the proposed project. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOT/FHWA Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Section Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or potentially eligible National Register archaeological resources were located within the proposed projects area of potential environmental effect as described in paragraph two above. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to hat described above.".
