Abstract

In May 2011, Environmental Services, Inc. (ESI), on behalf of AA Shaw, LLC, performed a cultural resource assessment survey of the AA Shaw Wetland Mitigation Bank located in Effingham County, Georgia. The goal of the survey was to locate, identify, delineate, and evaluate all cultural resources within the proposed impact areas, including prehistoric and historic archaeological sites and historic structures, to comply with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended. The archaeological survey included a pedestrian surface inspection and systematic shovel testing of proposed impact areas at 90-meter intervals. The project contains two parcels, the Deason Farm and the Dairy Farm parcels. As a result of the survey, three archaeological sites (9EF291, 9EF292, and 9EF293) were encountered within the areas of impact. These sites include two historic artifact scatters in the agricultural fields on the Dairy Farm parcel, and one historic house site on the Deason Farm parcel. Evaluation of these sites determined that they do not meet the criteria to make them eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The proposed AA Shaw Mitigation Bank project should be allowed to proceed without further concern regarding significant cultural resources within the area of proposed impacts.
