Abstract

The current project is an addendum to the Phase I Archaeological Survey of the Oconee Trail Corridor carried out in 2008 (Valk 2008). This project as conducted for Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. in preparation for a trail that would run along the North Oconee River and through undeveloped University of Georgia (UGA) land adjacent to R10 (P.I. No. 0007637, HP-080605-001 ). The objective of the addendum fieldwork was to survey three overlook areas that were not included in the original survey and to research and determine the boundaries for site 9CA116 (an archaeological site associated with the Athens Factory). The fieldwork resulted in the establishment of a boundary for 9CA116. This site is a wall remnant associated with the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) listed Athens Factory, is intact, and is recommended eligible for the NRHP under Criterion A. It is recommend that the wall be preserved and interpreted during the construction of the trail and overlooks. Overlook Area 1 is located within the site boundary for 9CA116. No diagnostic or substantial subsurface deposits were located within the overlook area, but it is recommend d that once the plans for this overlook are completed, an assessment of effects should be prepare to determine if it will have an effect on Site 9CA116. Survey of Overlook Areas 2 and 3 did not result in the discovery of any prehistoric or historic sites and do not effect 9CA116.
