Abstract

The proposed project would reconstruct the SR 96 interchange over I-75 in Peach County. The proposed project would widen SR 96 from two lanes to four lanes and the existing ramps on I-75 would be relocated and reconstructed. The reevaluation survey was concerned with surveying all changes made to the project that are different for the original project design. The project originally began 2638 feet west of I-75 and ended 2638 feet east of I-75. The project now begins 2800 feet west of 1-75 and ends 3700 feet east of 1- 75. The required right-of-way was increased from 120 feet to 250 feet. Finally, the ramps are being relocated 250 feet out from the existing ramps. An archaeological survey (Level II) was conducted in accordance with "GDOTIFHW A Cultural Resource Survey Guidelines" developed by the GDOT Staff Archaeologists in consultation with DNR Historic Preservation Division Staff and concurred in by the Federal Highway Administration and State Historic Preservation Officer. These guidelines provide general survey boundaries and methodological approaches to archaeological surveys based on the type/scope of work of proposed highway projects and are followed during the initial identification of archaeological resources. No existing or eligible National Register resources were located within the project's area of potential environmental effect. It is concluded, therefore, that the project will have no effect upon archaeological resources on or eligible for inclusion in the NRHP provided that the project conforms to that described above.
