Abstract

An intensive cultural resources survey was conducted of the proposed Tatum transmission line route and substation location in Troup County, just west of La Grange, Georgia. Five archeological sites and one artifact occurrence were recorded. The sites consist of four prehistoric sites, three with historic ceramics, and one historic cemetery. The four prehistoric/historic sites are recommended ineligible to the National Register of Historic Places because of heavy disturbance and low artifact density, both of which severely limit their research potential. The eligibility of Mt. Beulah Cemetery is unknown because the number of graves and their age is undetermined. It is recommended that this site be avoided. Two standing structures, historic homes along the transmission line route, will not be adversely impacted by construction of this project due to previous visual degradation by existing transmission lines, as well as extant vegetation screens.
