Abstract

The Chattooga River Ranger District (RD) of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests is proposing to upgrade an existing user created road so that it can be made a formally designated system road in Stephens County, Georgia. This road will be reconstructed to a higher standard. Surveys were conducted of a 100 foot wide corridor along the length of this road in July and September, 2012 (17 acres). A total of three new archaeological sites were recorded, while five previously recorded sites were revisited. Of the eight sites discussed in this report, four (9ST93, 9ST209, 9ST336, 9ST337) are considered not eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), one (9ST338) is considered to be eligible for the NRHP, and the remaining three sites have not been evaluated and have an undetermined NRHP status. All unevaluated or eligible sites are located outside the Area of Potential Effect for this undertaking. It is recommended that the proposed reconstruction of this road proceed as planned.
