Abstract

The methods and results of an archaeological assessment of the proposed 81 hectare lake impoundment area along Gum Creek in the Big Lazer Creek Wildlife Management Area are presented. Two secondary deposition artifact locations, one 'prehistoric quartzite quarry, and a historic agricultural flood-control ditch were encountered. It is concluded that the quartzite quarry and flood-control ditch are significant cultural resources and eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. Recommendations are presented to mitigate the adverse effects of lake impoundment upon the significant resources.
