Abstract

New South Associates conducted a Phase I Archaeological Survey for the proposed Hardscrabble Multi-Use Path in Fulton County, Georgia. The Roswell Green Loop project includes a multi-use path on Hardscrabble Road between King Road and Etris Road, as well as sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, bike lanes, and intersection improvements. The study area ran along Hardscrabble Road between Brooksglen Drive and Etris Road, south along East Chaffin Road between Hardscrabble Road and Northgate Trace, and 152 meters (500 ft.) north along West Chaffin Road from Hardscrabble Road. The portion of Hardscrabble Road between East Chaffin Road and West Chaffin Road was examined in 2001 and therefore this section of Hardscrabble Road was excluded from the current survey. Two archaeological sites were identified during the survey. Site 9FU571 was a historic farm site located 15 meters east of East Chaffin Road. The site was composed of a light artifact scatter and the remains of a barn. Site 9FU572 was a mid-twentieth century site that included a small artifact scatter, a driveway, a brick-lined well, and building debris. Both sites are recommended not eligible to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) because they are heavily disturbed and have limited research potential.
