Abstract

Environmental Corporation of America (ECA) has completed an Archaeological Assessment for the federal undertaking at the subject site. The subject site includes a proposed approximate 2,099 square foot (195 square meter) irregularly shaped telecommunications facility and an approximate 1,370-foot long by 30-foot wide (418-meter by 9-meter) access/utility easement. Approximately 1,021 feet (311 meters) of the access/utility easement follows an existing graveled drive and the remaining 349 feet (106 meters) of access/utility easement is located on a previously disturbed grassed area. The proposed telecommunications facility would include a 179-foot (overall height) tall monopole telecommunications structure and associated ground level support equipment. The subject site is located at 1300 Cedar Shoals Drive, Athens, Clarke County, Georgia. This archaeological assessment was conducted in order to ascertain whether the proposed undertaking might directly or indirectly affect cultural resources, if any such resources exist. Through our review of available cultural records and databases, seven previously identified sites (9CA47, 9CA48, 9CA50, 9CA71, 9CA108, 9CA109, and 9CA199) and two surveys (2285, and 2422) were identified within a ¾-mile background research radius but outside the APE for direct effects. During the course of the field survey portion of this archaeological assessment no archaeological sites were identified. ECA believes that the proposed undertaking would have no effect on any historic or prehistoric archaeological resources that are listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Based on our findings related to archaeological resources, we recommend no further consultation under Section 106 Review of the National Historic Preservation Act for this proposed undertaking.
