Abstract

During the period of January 31 through February 18, 2013, R.S. Webb & Associates conducted a Phase I cultural resources survey of the proposed Big Indian Creek mitigation site as part of the Indian Creek water supply reservoir project in Carroll County, Georgia. The project area encompasses a section of Indian Creek, approximately 2.0 kilometers (km) southwest of Bowdon, Georgia. The study was conducted for the Carroll County Water Authority to locate and identify cultural resources within the survey area and to assess resource significance based on National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) criteria [36CFR Part 60.4 (a-d)]. The Phase I cultural resources survey included a literature review and intensive field survey. During the literature review, state and county records, maps, and documents were examined to determine if previously recorded archeological sites or historic structures are located in or around the project area. The cultural resources field survey was conducted using surface and subsurface techniques to locate and identify archeological resources within the survey area. The Area of Potential Effects (APE) was set at 30 m beyond the boundaries of the survey tracts based on the nature of the proposed undertaking and the field evaluation of topography and vegetation. The APE was surveyed for historic structures/features.
