Abstract

R.S. Webb & Associates (RSWA) conducted a Phase I cultural resources survey of the proposed Etowah River Road Mitigation Bank project in Dawson County, Georgia, from November 12‑19, 2012. Phase II testing was conducted on archeological site 9DW267 April 18‑26, 2013 to clearly assess National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility. Additional literature search, historic resources survey, and field reconnaissance was conducted January 16 and 17, 2014. The study was conducted on behalf of Mitigation Management Group, LLC to locate and identify cultural resources within the project=s Area of Potential Effects (APE) and to assess resource significance based on NRHP criteria [36 CFR Part 60.4]. The project area is defined as the proposed 54.6‑ hectare (ha)(134.9 acres) mitigation bank. An intensive survey was conducted only in the area scheduled for excavation, a channel restoration corridor totaling approximately 2,408 meters (m) (7,896 feet) in length and 30 m (100 feet) wide within the mitigation bank. The most recent project plans indicate that 638 m of this corridor are now scheduled for filling/burial rather than excavation along with 1,586 m of agricultural drainage ditches. The remainder of the mitigation bank will be planted in hardwood seedlings with some areas in native grass.
