Abstract

Edwards‑Pitman Environmental, Inc. performed a ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey within three sample blocks at Camp Lawton, 9JS1, on February 11 and 12, 2015. The work was performed gratis as a contribution to the ongoing research of Georgia Southern University=s (GSU=s) Camp Lawton Archaeology Project, directed by Dr. Lance Greene. Two GPR grids were placed within the former prisoner stockade area that held Union prisoners, and another was placed within a former Confederate earthwork/fort. GPR data were processed and analyzed to look for signatures of possible subterranean features of archaeological interest. While many of the recorded GPR reflections appear to be related to roots, utility lines, or other non‑archaeological subterranean features, this analysis calls attention to nine specific sets of reflections of unknown origin. EPEI is hopeful this data will prove beneficial to Dr. Greene and GSU in their ongoing investigations of this remarkably well preserved nineteenth century military prison camp.
