Abstract

The Anthony Shoals site (9Ws5l) is located in Wilkes County of northeast Georgia at the backwaters of Clarks Hill Lake. Test excavations were conducted there in September 1987 to evaluate the impacts caused by looters and to ascertain whether portions of the site were still intact. The testing revealed significant prehistoric Indian occupations dating from about 2500 B.C. to A.D. 1650. Major archeological components from the Late Archaic (Savannah River), Early Woodland (Kellogg), and Late Mississippian (Lamar) were recorded. The work demonstrated that approximately 71% of the site remains intact, but 16% has been completely destroyed by looting. Approximately 13% of the intact portion is currently being impacted by public use activities. Recommendations for site monitoring, salvage excavations, and landscape restoration are put forth in an effort to conserve this valuable resource.
