Abstract

New South Associates conducted a Phase I Archaeological Survey of Windy Hill Road and Cobb Parkway [GDOT PI # 0011738] on April 24, 2013. The survey area included existing and expanded right of way (ROW) at the intersection of Cobb Parkway and Windy Hill Road in Cobb County, Georgia. The corridor extends approximately 1,584 feet (483 m) along Windy Hill Road, and approximately 2,217 feet (675 m) along Cobb Parkway Road. The area of potential effect (APE) and an additional 100 feet (30 m) on each side of the APE known as the Expanded Survey Corridor (ESC) were examined by a systematic pedestrian survey that included the examination of all exposed surfaces and the investigation of shovel test pit locations at a 100‑foot interval along both sides of each roadway. The work for this survey was conducted in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended (36 CFR 800), and was intended to determine the presence of significant archaeological resources in the project=s APE.

No artifacts were identified as a result of the survey. However, one historic cemetery, Site 9CO742, established between 1955 and 1960 was identified adjacent to the APE and within the ESC. The eligibility status for this site is unknown for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). As the proposed road improvements will not impact this cemetery, no further work is necessary to satisfy Section 106 requirements and the planned undertaking may proceed.
