Abstract

This reports covers two cultural resources surveys totaling 189 acres on the Hitchiti Experimental Forest in northwestern Jones, County Georgia. The location is approximately 15 miles north of Macon, near the Ocmulgee River. Parts of the areas were logged over during an epidemic of Southern Pine Beetle damage in summer 1986, and others were scheduled to be cleared and mechanically site prepared for reforestation. Nine sites were found, of which five will require protection and testing to determine their eligibility under the National Register criteria. All but two were prehistoric Lithic scatters. One was an early 20th century farmhouse site; the other was a prehistoric ceramic scatter along an old field terrace. Since the pine beetle work was done ahead of the survey, little further damage is expected on most locations. The mechanical site prep areas would effect only one possibly significant site, which will be deleted from the mechanical treatment plan in order to protect it from disturbance.
