Abstract

R.S. Webb and Associates conducted an archaeological resources survey of the proposed State Route 9/Atlanta Street improvements corridor during the period of February 24 through March 18, 1997. The survey was conducted on behalf of HNTB Architects Engineers Planners and the City of Roswell Department of Transportation. The survey’s goal was locate and identify archaeological resources within the project area and assess resource significance based on National Register of Historic Places criteria [36 CFR Part 60.4]. A separate historic resources survey was conducted by The Jaeger Company and is presented in a companion document titled, Historic Resources Survey Report, Improvement of State Route 9/Atlanta Street from Dunwoody Place to Hill Street in Roswell, Fulton County. The study corridor covers approximately 4.8 kilometers (3.0 miles) and is located in the City of Roswell and adjacent National Park Service land, Fulton County, Georgia.

Seventeen archaeological resources were identified during the field survey of the study corridor: seven 19th-20th century house site/complexes with associated artifact scatter/features – two with prehistoric isolates; four 19th through 20th century artifact scatters; one middle 19th through 20th century discard area; one middle 19th through 20th century church cemetery; one middle19th through early 20th century mill; one late 19th century railroad bed; one historic (19th century) isolate; and one prehistoric isolate. Significant resources include: the Presbyterian Church Cemetery, within the Roswell Historic District; Barrington Hall, within the district and an individually-listed National Register Property; one National Register-eligible property, Allenbrook; and two recommended eligible properties, Ivy Mill and the historic railroad bed. The remaining archaeological resources are recommended as ineligible for the National Register due to lack of integrity.
