Abstract

The proposed project would replace the existing substandard bridge on US 129/SR 11 crossing House Creek (Figure 1). The existing bridge is 297 feet long with two 12 foot lanes, two foot paved shoulder, and two foot sidewalk. Existing right-of-way (ROW) varies from 100 to 150 feet. The new bridge would measure 300 feet long, and have two 12 foot lanes with 8 foot shoulders with a total deck width of slightly over 40 feet. The proposed bridge would be constructed on a new parallel alignment just southwest of the existing road. This alignment will serve to avoid the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) fish hatchery and the Bowens Mill Christian Community school on the east side of US 129/SR 11.

During preliminary design, the project's southern terminus (begin project) was extended 1,200 feet and some required ROW was added (widened APE) to meet design standards at a curve on existing SR 11 (Figure 2). Also, construction limits were lengthened slightly at the project's northern terminus and along SR 182/River Road. The proposed revised project length is 1.04 miles long with required ROW on the west side of US 129/SR 11 that varies up to 92 feet at its maximum width (Figures 3 and 4). All other construction activity would occur within existing ROW.
