Abstract

New South Associates completed the Phase I Archaeological Survey of the Interstate North tract in Cobb County, Georgia at the request of Contour Environmental, LLC. The proposed undertaking involves construction of an approximately 540,000 square-foot light industrial warehouse facility within a 45-acre parcel. The survey was necessary to satisfy a requirement for a Section 404 individual permit. The work for this survey was intended to determine the presence of significant archaeological resources in the project’s Area of Potential Effect (APE), which included the entire 45-acre parcel. The project included background research, systematic shovel testing and surface examination of the survey tract, and reporting. There were no previously recorded archaeological sites in the project area. Background research suggests the study tract was relatively undeveloped in the twentieth century, with the exception of a house and outbuildings, as well as a borrow pit area in the northeastern corner. The survey identified a twentieth-century house and outbuildings (9CO751) in the APE. This site is recommended not eligible for inclusion on the NRHP. The proposed project will have no effect on properties that are listed or eligible for listing on the NRHP, and the undertaking may proceed.
