Abstract

The proposed project would consist of the replacement of the structurally deficient bridge on State Route (SR) 230 over Turkey Creek 9.5 miles west of Vienna in Dooly County, Georgia (Figure 1). The existing bridge structure, constructed in 1963, is a 141-foot x 26-foot concrete and steel structure with a design load capacity of H-15 and a sufficiency rating of 58. SR 230 at this location is a rural two-lane roadway with two 10.5-foot lanes and 4-foot shoulders (2 feet paved). The existing right-of-way (ROW) on SR 230 is 80 feet and the roadway is classified as a major collector with a design speed of 55 MPH. The proposed replacement bridge structure would consist of a new 150-foot x 38-foot reinforced concrete bridge structure over Turkey Creek at the existing bridge site. The approaches would consist of two 12-foot lanes with 10-foot rural shoulders (2 feet paved). The proposed right-of-way would vary from 80 feet to 120 feet and the proposed design speed is 55 MPH. During construction, an on-site detour bridge will be used for traffic control.

The original archaeological survey for this project was completed by GDOT archaeologists in 2008 (Gale 2012). Since that time, the proposed bridge design was raised and the project limits were lengthened by 200 feet to the south and 100 feet to the north to facilitate the additional roadway work required.
