Abstract

From September 16 to September 27, 2002, Southern Research Historic Preservation Consultants, Inc., of Ellerslie, Georgia conducted archival research and archaeological excavations within two areas of the Jekyll Island Club Historic District (9GN224), a multi-component historic district on Jekyll Island, Glynn County, Georgia. This investigation was conducted at the request of the Jekyll Island Authority (TIA) in advance of repaving and expansion of the current parking lot facilities according to a project plan proposed by the Jaeger Company of Gainesville, Georgia. The scope of the current archaeological investigations was to locate the surface and subsurface remains of the Blacksmith/Carpenter shop, Laundry building, Clark Cottage, and Fairbanks/ Ferguson/Strassberger/Thayer Cottage. The vestiges of these buildings have the potential to be impacted by the construction of new parking areas and pedestrian footpaths. Information recovered from archival and archaeological investigations enabled the location of the remains of the non-extant buildings. Knowing the location of these remains will minimize the amount of disturbance to these structural features during the course of repaving the parking areas. Additionally, the information, which has resulted from this current investigation, will be useful in the development of an interpretive program regarding the service area of the island, the lives of the workers and nature of their work.
