Abstract

This project was undertaken by the Archeological Survey for the firm of Wiedeman and Singleton, Engineers, as an emergency request. Correspondence of January 7th, 22nd' and 26th is attached to this report as Appendix B. Maps were supplied by the engineers and redrawn by the staff cartographer, Thomas'G. Wilson. Field reconnaissance was carried out by Marvin T. Smith, MA, Staff Archeologist; Edward I. Dittmar, BS, Staff Geologist; and a trained crew of field assistants, all holding BA or BS degrees. A preliminary surface reconnaissance was carried out the week of January 12th. The report of that reconnaissance is attached to this report as Appendix A. The methodology employed was the standard ,field technique as set forth in Fenenga, Heizer and Graham(l) and modified to meet the particular needs demanded by the topography and floral cover. Subsurface tests were carried out wherever insufficient surface evidence did not exist. Identification and analysis of recovered materials were made in the Survey's Atlanta laboratory after the proper cleaning and cataloging. Identification of materials of aboriginal date was made from personal experience and the use of Wauchope's text.< 2> Expert review of the data and report format was entrusted to Arthur R. Kelly, Emeritus Professor of Anthropology, University of Georgia, and former Chief Archeologist for the National Park Service. In addition, a copy of the report will be forwarded to Dr. David Hally, currently Director, Laboratory of Archaeology, University of Georgia.
