Abstract

New South Associates, Inc. conducted a Phase I Cultural Resource Survey of the Gateway Tract in Columbia County, Georgia. The Area of Potential Effect APE) consists of a 50.6-hectare 1125-ac.) parcel on the south side of Interstate 20 just east of the new Gateway Walmart on Horizon South Parkway. New South conducted this survey at the request of Resource & Land Consultants. Background research revealed no previously recorded archaeological sites or resources listed on the National Register of Historic Places INRHP) within the APE. Fieldwork carried out in November of 2009 consisted of 314 shovel tests and an extensive pedestrian survey on the Gateway Tract project parcel. As a result of the archaeological survey, three isolated finds and a single archaeological site I9CB631) were identified. Site 9CB631 has been severely eroded and disturbed and New South recommends this site not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. Based on the results of the Phase I survey, New South Associates recommends that no further cultural resource management work is necessary within the Gateway Tract project parcel.
