Over the past five years (Spring 1976 - Spring 1981) archaeological investigations were conducted intermittently on Georgia Department of Transportation Project #APD-056-2(7): the Ellijay to Blue Ridge Mainline in Gilmer/Fannin Counties, Georgia. Reconnaissance and intensive archaeological surveys utilizing sampling strategies, surface collecting, shovel, firerake, and auger testing as well as formal testing, led to the identification of five archaeological sites. One site, 9GI(DOT)5, has been previously determined eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, but it will not be affected by the project. A second site [9Gi(DOT)21], located on a tributary of Turniptown Creek, was found to contain intact buried cultural remains dating to the Late Early Woodland and possibly Protohistoric time periods. Because of the potential for yielding new and significant data for an area as yet little explored archaeologically, and since at least a portion of the site will be affected by the project, the site is suggested for National Register of Historic Places Eligibility Determination.
