Abstract

Cultural resource inventory and evaluation studies (Resource Inventory II) were conducted for the Lloyd Shoals Hydroelectric Project in Butts, Henry, Jasper, and Newton Counties, Georgia. These studies were carried out under Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Regulations to determine if cultural properties are present within Project boundaries and to assess the eligibility of any properties located for the National Register of Historic Places. Field inventory methods consisted of screened shovel cutting at 30 meter intervals and surface examination of cleared areas. General evaluation procedures consisted of 15 meter close interval screened shovel cuts and excavation of 50 by 50 cm, 1 by 1 m, and 1 by 2 m shovel tests. Inventory and evaluation procedures resulted in the discovery and delineation of 27 cultural properties. These consist of 8 historic period properties, 14 prehistoric properties, and 5 properties containing both prehistoric and historic components. All but one of these cultural properties fall within the Georgia Power Company project boundary. These properties are located in a variety of environmental settings, and exhibit a wide range of cultural variability. National Register eligibility assessments were based on the Secretary of Interior's Standards for Evaluation. Twenty-one of the properties are recommended as ineligible for the NRHP, 1 property is recommended as potentially eligible, and 4 properties are recommended eligible for the NRHP. The single property located outside the project boundary was not evaluated.
