Abstract

On March 4, 1999, personnel from Southeastern Archeological Services, Inc., surveyed a 1.2 km (4000 ft) portion of State Route 96 at its intersection with Houston Lake Road (Figure 1). Houston Lake Road will be widened to accommodate increasingly heavy traffic; the intersection will be modified to facilitate traffic flow. This report is an addendum to "An Archeological Survey of the Houston Lake Road Widening Project, Houston County, Georgia" by S. Dwight Kirkland and Chad 0. Braley (1998).  No engineering plans were available at the time ofthe survey, so both sides ofSR 96 were examined for archeological sites. The intersection occupies flat ground, well removed from any natural sources of water. Currently, most of the area consists of plowed fields but the northwest, northeast, and southwest corners of the intersection arc developed (convenience stores). West of Houston Lake Road there was good surface visibility, with 80- 100 percent exposure. East of Houston Lake Road there was 100 percent ground surface visibility south of SR 96 and 25 percent visibility north ofthe road. Because of ideal survey conditions, no subsurface testing was necessary. The surveyors inspected the entire area and found no archeological sites. Three pieces of modem whiteware or ironstone were found in the southwest comer of the intersection, but were not collected. In conclusion, there are no archeological sites within the proposed widening of SR 96 at its intersection with Houston Lake Road. No further archeological study is needed at this location, and the project should be a11owed to proceed.
