The Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests are located on roughly 865,000 acres of Federal lands in northern and Central Georgia. The Chattahoochee National Forest is located in the mountains of northern Georgia, and includes approximately 750,000 acres in parts of 18 counties (Banks, Catoosa, Chattooga, Dawson, Fannin, Floyd, Gilmer, Gordon, Habersham, Lumpkin, Murray, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union, Walker, White, Whitfield). The Oconee National Forest (also referred to as the Oconee Ranger District) comprises 115,000 acres of land in seven counties (Greene, Jasper, Jones, Morgan, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Putnam) in the middle Georgia Piedmont Plateau, roughly between Athens and Macon. Of these, 606 have been determined eligible for the NRHP, 2,059 have been determined ineligible for the NRHP, and 1,274 have yet to be evaluated.
