Abstract

New South Associates conducted a Phase I archaeological survey on September 18 and 22, 1998 of 2.9 km (1.8 miles) of new alignment for the proposed Octagon Road in Henry County. The project corridor, on that date, was defined as having a 30 m (100 feet) right-of-way. However, a 91 m (300 feet) wide corridor was investigated to allow for site avoidance, if necessary. Subsequent to the initial survey of the study corridor, the southern 503 meters (1,650 feet) were rerouted necessitating additional archaeological survey. The new alignment begins approximately 229 meters (750 feet) east of orignal centerline. It continues roughly north, intersecting a modern house on the south side of Holloway Road. Once across Holloway Road, the corridor turns northwest passing a house to the west and intersects the original line in approximately 304 meters (1000 feet) (Figure 1).

This addendum report contains only a discussion of the survey of the original right-of-way, a description of the additional work performed, and conclusions regarding the findings of the additional survey. The reader is referred to the original report for the prehistoric and historic overview. The Principal Investigator for this study was J. W. Joseph, Ph.D. The Field Director and report author was Theresa M. Hamby. Nancy Lorenz assisted in the field.
