Phase I Archaeological Survey of the Proposed Runway Extension of the Jackson County Airport, Jefferson, Georgia

Abstract

New South Associates conducted a Phase I archeological survey of the proposed runway extension of the Jackson County Airport on January 2, 2007. The proposed extension would lengthen the existing runway I ,000 feet to the north of its current termination point. The project area is located approximately 4.4 miles north of the City of Jefferson in Jackson County, Georgia (Figure I). Recent grading activity has impacted the entire project area. Culturally sterile subsoil was observed on the surface of all of shovel test pit locations investigated. No artifacts were recovered as a result of the survey. Additionally, no features were identified within the proposed runway extension that might be associated with the Oconee Cemetery, which was located on a hill approximately I ,200 feet north of the survey area and separated by a creek and open field (Figure I). No further archaeological survey is recommended for the project area.
