Abstract

Cultural resource reconnaissance of the proposed Gaines Ferry substation site and associated electrical transmission line corridor was conducted by the principal investigator on August 21, 1990. The project area consisted of a block unit covering hectares (4.098 acres) and a 23 meter wide linear segment extending for approximately 800 meters. The total area of the survey was 2.19 hectares. The block unit and the transmission line corridor were examined through surface inspection and placement of shovel tests at 30 m intervals. No cultural materials were recovered. The project area was found to be devoid of prehistoric and historic period artifacts and no other evidence of utilization of the property, such as structural ruins, was discovered. There appear to be no archaeological impediments to the construction substation or placement of the transmission line in this location.
