Abstract

Cultural resources surveys were conducted in 1988 on three parcels of National Forest land prior to proposed land exchanges with the private sector. The parcels were located in Lumpkin, White and Stephens counties, on mostly steeply sloping land, which was heavily eroded. The Turner tract straddled the Lumpkin-White county lines, near Turner's Corners, and contained 466 acres. The Vaughan survey included both the 45-acre parcel proposed for exchange and 80 acres of adjacent timber sales areas. One historic period gold mining ditch flume was found crossing the Vaughan exchange parcel, which will not effect the proposed exchange. The Davison Mineral Property tract contained 162 acres adjacent to the quarry site near Toccoa, in Stephens County. The land was steep and eroded, and no sites were found on it. Cultural resources clearance is recommended for all three parcels to be exchanged.
