Abstract

This report documents the archeological investigations conducted during the Cultural Resources Review of the Fort Benning Master Plan Phase II. These investigations were conducted in eighteen separate project areas located in Muscogee and Chattahoochee Counties, Georgia. Two areas encompassing approximately 820 acres were examined at the reconnaissance level. Fifteen project areas encompassing approximately 442 acres were examined at the intensive survey level. Seven previously identified cultural resources, in seven different project areas, were assessed as to their significance and eligibility for nomination to or inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. Twelve previously unidentified cultural resources were discovered through archeological reconnaissance or intensive survey. Three of these resources were isolated finds. Five of the newly discovered sites were not significant. Three sites were recommended for additional assessment. One site was assessed to be potentially significant. It was recommended for avoidance or testing and possibly data recovery. Five of the seven previously identified cultural resources were not significant. Two sites were deemed eligible or potentially eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. One site, 9Ce224, was outside the current project boundaries and should not be affected by present planned development. Additional investigations were recommended if future developments threaten the site. Avoidance or data recovery was recommended for 9Me219. Recommendations concerning the nature of testing or data recovery efforts for all potentially significant sites were provided.
